What is a labyrinth?A magnificent and symbolic pattern dating back at least 3,500 years, the labyrinth has been found in various cultures, traditions, and religions around our world. The pattern can be physically walked when it has been laid out on a floor of a building, church, or cathedral or on the ground outdoors. The labyrinth can be "walked" on paper or on a manufactured wooden table labyrinth with the non-dominate hand. It can be followed with an icon on a computer www.labyrinthonline.com or traced in sand. The labyrinth is found in churches and cathedrals, the most popular being the labyrinth built into the floor of Notre Dame d'Chartres (www.chartrescathedral.com). The stonemason who built the labyrinth at Chartres in 1201 has been nicknamed "Scarlet" by Dr. John James, Australian architect, authority on Chartres, and author of the book The Master Masons of Chartres. (ISBN 0-646-00805-6) It is my understanding that Labyrinths were built to be used as an ending to the pilgrimage made by the faithful to their "Notre Dame" (mother church) during the middle ages because it was too dangerous to make the Christian's pilgrimage to the holy land; thus, the nickname, "New Jerusalem". The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress of Grace Episcopal in San Francisco is credited for re-introducing the labyrinth to the world as a contemporary psycho-spiritual tool in the early 1990s, having learned about the pattern from Dr. Jean Houston. Grace Cathedral was the first church to duplicate the Chartres labyrinth pattern in its Inter-Faith Garden using terrazzo marble (pictured on the front page of this web site). Labyrinths are being used in mental and medical hospitals, retreat and recovery centers to name a few. Check out the turf labyrinth in Ovalo, Texas, pictured in the links section of this site. There is much to learn and to share
about the labyrinth as a contemporary psycho-spiritual tool, if we feel
called to do so. Whatever you choose to do, whatever path you choose
to take, you are wished
